Living The Dream

Updated: Dec 5, 2023

Are you making a living out of your dreams? Could you?

Can your hobby become your living?

Who is actually ‘living the dream?

Is it something that is only reserved for the rich and famous? Does it just mean big boats and luxurious holidays? We all know the saying but have you ever stopped to take in what it means? It can be more achievable than you think.

I do consider myself lucky that I make my living out of my passion, my hobby, my love, whatever you want to call it…and I don’t think it ever occurred to me that I wouldn’t…

From setting up dance clubs at school to hiring halls as a student and delivering dance and fitness classes in the holidays to make money, teaching has always been a part of me…to pass on my love to others. To encourage others to follow their passion and reach their goals. But how did I do it and how can you do it to?

At 16 I had the opportunity to go and study at performing arts school but I decided to stay on at my secondary and look to study it at 18 instead. There were so many options open to me there was no doubt that I would go on at 18 and study what I loved EVERYDAY! Amazing!

So I followed my love of dance through to Degree level, studied it day in and day out for four years…I then trained to teach it at a top training provider for another year and then went on to teach it, day in and day out for another 7 years…that’s 12 years of training and working in the thing I LOVE!

When I was studying and teaching, the question I’d get asked the most was about what opportunities studying dance and performance would give, what else was there to do if you didn’t ‘make it’ as a performer. Clearly this would rile me! And it still does. There are so many options open and you don’t have to stick to just one pathway either…you can earn a living in so many different ways all within the area of the subject you love…

Without making a list of a thousand different jobs here, just think about the thing you love to do and all the other aspects that surround it…who are the people behind the scenes? Who are the people helping you succeed in that pathway, whether it’s the teachers, the coaches, the trainers….who are the people bringing the event or performance to life? The production team, the events team, the marketing team?

You don’t have to have a goal to be the ‘main event’…the performer, the footballer, the racing car driver the pop star, the chef! But you can still have a job within that industry…still surround yourself with all those things that make you happy, give you motivation, make you want to go to work every day with a smile on your face.

For me, I changed my pathway slightly when my family came along , I adjusted what I did to fit around a new life and I am now ten years into running my own business and still able to make a living out of my passion, out of my love, out of my dreams…

Literally, Living the Dream.
